Barrasso Talks Border Security with CBP Commissioner Nominee

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) spoke with Rodney Scott, the nominee to be Commissioner of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), on ways we can continue to secure our borders and ports of entry to address illegal immigration and combat fentanyl.

Senator Barrasso also discussed how critical it is for the Natrona County International Airport in Casper, Wyoming to maintain a CBP presence. Additionally, he highlighted the need to ensure Wyoming’s small businesses have access to clear, timely information on how to navigate customs regulations.

Scott testified today before the Senate Committee on Finance.

On Border Security:

“In terms of what’s been happening, we see that in March 2025, recorded border crossings were at an all-time historic low.

“We have gained operational control of the border under President Trump.

“In March 2025, Border Patrol encountered just 7,000 illegal immigrants crossing the southwest border between ports of entry.

“This is a 95-percent decrease from March 2024.

“Illegal immigrants are getting the message that the Trump administration has removed the welcome mat from illegal immigration.

“If confirmed, what will you do to continue the trend of these historically low border crossing numbers?”

On Combating Fentanyl at Ports of Entry:

“You mentioned fentanyl specifically. I’m a doctor and I know the tragedy that has resulted because of this.

“What additional resources does CBP need from Congress to strengthen the frontline defense against fentanyl at our ports of entry?”

On Casper Port of Entry:

“The Natrona County International Airport in Casper serves as Wyoming’s only international port of entry.

“CBP’s presence at this facility ensures proper screening of international arrivals while facilitating critical global trade operations for our Wyoming businesses.

“The port of entry is pivotal to sustaining our robust economy and workforce.

“Can you give me your commitment that, if confirmed, you will provide staffing and resources for Border Patrol at the Natrona County International Airport?

On Supporting Wyoming Businesses in Global Markets:

“The rise of e-commerce has created new opportunities for all our states, and certainly in Wyoming, we’ve seen this increase opportunity for businesses to expand their reach far beyond our state’s borders.

“They still face significant challenges navigating the complex customs regulations that govern international trade.

“When exporting their products, they run into complex procedures related to customs, burdensome documentation requirements, and evolving trade regulations.

“All too often, this confusing process leads to costly errors resulting in delays and penalties that threaten these businesses’ survival.

“With proper guidance, our small businesses could reach new global markets, creating opportunities for communities in Wyoming and across other states as well.

“If confirmed, will you work to ensure that small businesses in rural states like Wyoming have access to clear, timely information on how to navigate our customs regulations?”
