Barrasso Honors Wyoming’s Veterans

“Wyoming has one of the highest per-capita rates of veterans in America. Wyoming’s pride in those who served runs deep…I will continue to listen to our veterans, work to improve their care, and honor their sacrifices.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), spoke on the Senate floor to honor and recognize the contributions of Wyoming’s veterans to a grateful nation.

Barrasso also highlighted a recent tele-town hall with Wyoming veterans he hosted with Senator Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.), Veterans Affairs Secretary Doug Collins, and Executive Director of the Wyoming Veterans Commission Colonel Tim Sheppard.

Sen. Barrasso’s remarks as prepared:

“This week, I had the opportunity to speak with incredible Wyoming veterans from across the state. I thanked them for their service. I also took this opportunity to listen closely to their concerns.

“On Tuesday, Senator Cynthia Lummis and I hosted a Telephone Town Hall with Veterans Affairs Secretary Doug Collins.

“Colonel Tim Sheppard – who is the Executive Director of the Wyoming Veterans Commission – also joined us.

“The call was productive.

“Wyoming veterans shared their experience directly with Secretary Collins. They shared what works at the VA and where it falls short.

“We heard many ideas for improvement. Suggestions ranged from changes to online scheduling to more flexibility for out-of-state appointments.

“Secretary Collins took this feedback seriously. Secretary Collins is himself a veteran. He knows the VA is too bureaucratic. He is committed to fix it.

“I am proud to partner with him to deliver the care our veterans deserve.

“On Wednesday, I met with 16 Wyoming Vietnam veterans in Washington D.C.

“These 16 Wyoming heroes came from across our state – Guernsey, Thermopolis, Powell, Casper, Cheyenne, Mountain View, Douglas, Newcastle, and Green River.

“Their stories of service and sacrifice were deeply moving.

“This weekend, Wyoming will hold welcome home events across the state in Afton, Riverton, Sheridan and Wheatland.

“It is a welcome home many Vietnam veterans sadly never received.

“This weekend, we honor all of Wyoming’s veterans.

“Wyoming has one of the highest per-capita rates of veterans in America. Wyoming’s pride in those who served runs deep.

“It is an honor to represent them in the United States Senate.

“I will continue to listen to our veterans, work to improve their care, and honor their sacrifices.”
