WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), Senate Majority Whip, today spoke on the Senate Floor in support of the Republican budget resolution that will lead to a safer, more prosperous nation.

Sen. Barrasso’s remarks as prepared:

“For four years, Joe Biden and the Democrats ran our country and our economy into the ground. Every measure shows it.10 million illegal immigrants, $5 trillion in wasteful Washington spending, the worst inflation in 40 years, energy prices rising over 30 percent, a weak, failed foreign policy.

“In November, Americans chose a new path. Senate Republicans promised to get America back on track – and we are delivering. I was at the Rose Garden on Wednesday. I heard President Trump talk about our budget. He gave it his ‘complete and total endorsement.’

“Today’s Senate budget is the building block for our bold Republican agenda. It fulfills our promise to secure the border, rebuild the economy, and restore peace through strength. Most importantly, it represents in every way a 180-degree turn from the deadly, destructive liberal failures of the past four years.

“First, the Republican budget slashes waste – not Medicare, Social Security, or Medicaid. We protect these vital programs. We want to preserve them for the people they are intended for and who need them most.

“72 percent of Americans – and even 55 percent of Democrats – support cutting waste, fraud, and abuse. Our government is too big and spends too much. Yet for some reason, Senate Democrats seem to be more upset that the waste they support is being exposed than the massive waste itself.

“The last time we voted on the budget, Senator Sullivan of Alaska offered an amendment to preserve and protect Medicare and Medicaid. Not one single Senate Democrat supported it. The question now is, will Democrats continue to protect the schemers and the scammers who weaken these vital programs?

“Second, the Republican budget moves towards locking down the border with $175 billion in funding. It puts us on a path to finish the wall. It allows us to hire more Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers and Border Patrol Agents. It allows us to expand our detention capacity. Illegal immigrant criminals are going to be deported out of our country, not released into our communities. This is the opposite of what happened under the previous administration.

“That’s exactly what Americans need after four years of Wave-Them-In Joe’s open border policies. Illegal crossings have dropped 94 percent since President Trump took office. In March 2024, Joe Biden’s last year in the White House, there were 137,000 illegal crossings at our Southern border. This March, with President Trump in the White House, the number dropped to 7,000. Now, we need to deport the 600,000 illegal immigrants with criminal records who are already in our country. This budget ensures law enforcement will get the resources they need to make our communities safer.

“Third, the Republican budget means stopping Democrats’ $4 trillion tax increase. 90 percent of Americans got a tax cut from the Trump tax reforms. Our budget puts Congress on a path to make the Trump tax cuts permanent. Permanency means certainty and stability for families, workers, and job creators. Republicans want to ensure Americans can keep more of their hard-earned money.

“What is the Tax-and-Spend Senate Democrats’ plan? Crushing 20 million businesses and erasing 6 million jobs with the largest tax hike in history. For Republicans, a $4 trillion tax increase is a non-starter. For Democrats, it is their entire agenda.

“Fourth, the Republican budget means American energy dominance. No more liberal handcuffs on American energy. We are going back to energy independence. Affordable, reliable American energy is the best way to grow the economy and lower costs. With more energy production, Wyoming wins, and America wins. The federal government also wins. It will see its revenue increase as we produce more American energy.

“Fifth, and finally, the Republican budget rebuilds our military with $150 billion. Weakness invites conflict. Strength deters war. Today, there is the threat of terrorism. There is the threat of Communist China. China is rapidly building up its military. There is the threat of Iran. Iran is racing towards a nuclear bomb. This budget will make America feared again. It will make our military more lethal and intimidating.

“I suspect Senate Democrats will fight these common-sense policies.

“Well, I’ve got news for my colleagues. Democrats lost at the ballot box in November.  Republicans won then – and we will win now.

“Our win is not about us. It is about the American people. The American people gave us a mission and a mandate: secure borders, lower taxes, affordable energy, peace through strength, and, of course, efficient, effective government. Senate Republicans’ bold budget blueprint delivers.
