WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator John Barrasso (R-Wyo), said today New York Governor Eliot Spitzer’s (D-NY) decision to drop his plan to give driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants is the result of overwhelming public outcry.

“Governor Spitzer’s announcement today in D.C. is proof that people across our country are saying the same thing I hear every weekend in Wyoming : we want secure borders and a secure nation," Senator Barrasso said.  “But, we won’t truly be serious about securing our borders and stopping illegal immigration until every state stops the practice of issuing driver’s licenses to individuals who are in the country illegally.”

“I congratulate the New York Governor for changing course and not going forward with his plan.”

Spitzer’s decision comes one day after Barrasso introduced a bill that would discourage those few states that currently issue driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants by withholding 10 percent of federal highways funds.

“The bill I introduced says states that give driver's licenses to someone who has broken the law by coming into the country illegally will lose 10 percent of their highway funds,” Barrasso told Fox News in an interview today. “It would not go back to the treasury, it would go to the other states that comply with the law.”

Wyoming does not issue driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants.
